The Elgin Military Museum in St. Thomas, Ontario, is seeking candidates for the position of Curatorial Assistant
Period: May 16th, 2017 to September 2, 2017 inclusive. 32.5hrs per week Tuesday to Saturday, occasional Sundays.
Location: The Elgin Military Museum, 30 Talbot Street, St. Thomas, Ontario N5P 1A3. Occasion work may occur at our second site located at 3 Pitt Street, Port Burwell, Ontario.
Wage Rate: $12.50 per hour
Job Description: Working with Museum staff, the successful candidate will assist with the regular operation of the museum. Tasks may include reception (entry door & telephone), giving tours, curatorial work with artifacts, exhibit creation, and research, prepare and maintain archival records of veterans files by arranging and describing acquisitions, continued implementation of the archives project and updated storage plan and research finding aids, while adhering to recognized standards of archival documentation, and other regular museum duties as required.
NOTE: Due to the nature of the Museum’s collection, which includes restricted & prohibited weapons as well as “Controlled Goods”, the candidate will be required to pass an extensive background review prior to hiring.
The ideal candidate will be one considering a career in the museum/tourism sector or a related field. Necessary qualifications for this position include:
-Good communications skills (especially handwriting and spelling)
-The ability to work with minimal supervision and complete tasks quickly and efficiently
-Experience with computers, especially word processing, email, web searches and databases
-Good manual dexterity
-Current certification in First Aid, CPR and WHMIS would be an asset
-Knowledge of the local history and geography of the Elgin County area would be an asset
- A working knowledge of Canadian and or local military history would also be an asset
-Some evening and holiday work may be required
