Baile nan Gàidheal | Highland Village, is located in Iona, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia and is a folk life centre dedicated to preserving the language, culture and custom of the Gaelic speaking people who came to Nova Scotia. By the mid-19th century more than 50,000 Gaelic speaking immigrants from the Highlands and Islands of Scotland had settled in Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island. By the late 19th century, Gaels formed the dominant linguistic population in the province’s eastern counties with scores of thousands living in homogenous communities, speaking Gaelic or more properly, Gàidhlig, as their mother tongue.

The Nova Scotia Highland Village Society seeks to employ a student through the Young Canada Works program as a Curatorial Assistant, Research. The term of employment will be 14 weeks, beginning on May 8, 2017 – August 11, 2017. The wage rate is $15/hour based on a 35-hour work week. The position is located at the Highland Village site in Iona, Nova Scotia.

Working with staff, the student will support the continued evolution and growth of the Highland Village interpretive animation program through the development of an interpretive resource manual for one interpretive building, which will be used as a template for the preparation of manuals for each of the other buildings.

The student should be enrolled in a Celtic Studies, Museum Studies, or History program at a Canadian University and be eligible for the Young Canada Works in Heritage Institutions Program, have documented experience in historical research, report writing, good time management skills, be able to work with others and alone, and must be able to provide a clean criminal records check if selected. Knowledge of, and interest in, Nova Scotia Gaelic culture and identity would be an asset.
