Specific Responsibilities:

1. Animation and Enrichment of Exhibits. The Science Explorer works to engage the visitor in discovery and science exploration. This requires awareness of the visitor, imagination and creativity as well as familiarity with the exhibits and the scientific principles they illustrate.

2. Day Camps Programming. As directed, the Science Explorer conducts pre-arranged demonstrations and leads summer day camps programs. The Science Explorer will work as part of a team to facilitate science based activities to youth ages 6 to 12 for the summer.

3. Exhibit Maintenance and Evaluation. The Science Explorer maintains a clean environment on the exhibit floor and in the classroom spaces, as well as monitoring exhibits for effectiveness and needed repairs or improvements.

4. Education and Development. The Science Explorer continually develops his or her knowledge about science and visitor education by attending staff training sessions, reading available material and expressing innovative ideas.

5. Animal Care. The Science Explorer is typically responsible for the daily feeding and cleaning of the Science Centre’s resident animals. Training will be provided for handling animals.

6. Other Duties as assigned.

Positions are pending funding from Young Canada Works summer student grant.

Qualifications and Assets:
• Strong customer service skills with a positive attitude towards co-workers and visitors
• First Aid/CPR Certified
• Experience teaching or instructing children and adults
• Preference given to applicants with Education and/or Science Background
• Some university or technical training is considered an asset. Must be completed grade 12.
• High Five training would be considered an asset.
• Strong curiosity and interest in science

This position is pending funding from Young Canada Works. Candidates must meet the following criteria to qualify for this position:
- Must be a full time student
- Must be planning to return to school in the fall semester as a full time student
- Are a Canadian citizen or permanent resident and are legally entitled to work in Canada
- Between 16 and 30 years of age
- Be able to work full time hours for the duration of the work term
