Hamilton Artists Inc. is looking for a Gallery Assistant for 30 hours a week from June 7- August 19, 2017, working weekdays, evenings (during events) and weekends. The Inc. is a fast paced environment working with contemporary artists and the larger Hamilton community and is therefore looking for someone who is politically sensitive, friendly, innovative and has excellent communication skills. Job duties include: installation and gallery prep, research and program development, membership management, marketing and promotion of gallery events (print and online), exhibition coordination, grant writing, developing an exhibition essay, archival documentation and working directly with our cultural community.

Job Description:
The Gallery Assistant will work closely with the Executive and Programming Directors to provide preparatory, installation, administrative, research, and program development support to gallery exhibitions and the organizational archive. The Gallery Assistant will provide support for the planning and implementation of several exhibitions, membership coordination, special events and community outreach programs, including talks, screenings and workshops. This position will also support the development of our archival research facility as well as day to day tasks including administration and communications.

Requirements:
This position is funded through Young Canada Works and the Canadian Museums Association, which states that students must be registered as a full-time student during the preceding academic year; intend to return to secondary or post-secondary school on a full-time basis during the next academic year; are between 16 and 30 years of age; legally entitled to work in Canada; and not be working 30 hours or more at another job. Students with disabilities, Aboriginal students and students who are members of a visible minority are encouraged to apply.

Qualifications:
1. Meets the criteria for YCW Eligibility
2. Advanced English and basic French is an asset.
3. Excellent knowledge of contemporary art and Canadian artist-run centres.
4. Excellent written communication skills and proven ability to write critical interpretive texts
5. Currently undertaking a Studio Art, Art History, Museum Studies or Curatorial degree at the Undergraduate or Graduate level.
6. Full proficiency in Microsoft Office suite, Wordpress and social media platforms, Adobe Creative Suite (intermediate Illustrator, InDesign and Photoshop) typing, and researching skills. QuickBooks proficiency is an asset but not necessary.
7. Ability to multitask within a fast paced environment, autonomously as well as within a team setting
