Characteristics of Markham
The Museum is actively reaching out to our rapidly evolving community in all our activities. As the most diverse community in Ontario, 69% of Markham residents were born elsewhere and 65% do not speak English or French as a first language. Markham’s population is 340,000. The community was founded in 1794 by settlers of German, Pennsylvania German and British ancestry. Primarily a farming community until the 1950s, the City first expanded as a bedroom community for Toronto and more recently, development is creating a unique urban centre with an economy built on high tech industries.
The newest City in Canada (2012), Markham operates the Markham Theatre and the Varley Art Gallery and hosted four sports as part of the Toronto 2015 Pan Am / Para Pan Am Games. Markham is home to the largest four-day agricultural fair in Canada, and hosts many seasonal and community festivals throughout the year. The Museum’s Applefest, now in its 31st year, draws 5,000 visitors annually for a two-day event every September.
