The Markham Museum, a division of the Culture Department in the City of Markham is seeking an enthusiastic candidate for the new position of Museum Environmental Science Program Instructor.
Markham Museum offers unique family and education experience, on 25 acres of parkland, featuring over 20 historic buildings. Presenting the main themes of settlement as it relates to the environment, and the technologies used to adapt to life. Markham Museum connects the history of Markham to today’s new ‘settlers’ by examining our environment and the tools we use to adapt to our changing world. The 25-acre Museum site offers year-round: exhibits, school programs, public programs and events, private event venues and research facilities.
Commencing May 29th 2017 (approximate start date), this 13 week position (35 hrs per week at $13.29 per hour) will provide the successful candidate with an opportunity to gain skills in the areas of Museum Education, Program Planning, Administration, Staff Training and Program Evaluation while contributing to the advancement of the Museum.

This position reports to the full-time Museum Program Coordinator.

Job Summary:

Since 1971, Markham Museum has offered a unique family and educational experiences, on 25 acres of parkland, featuring over 32 built structures. Our gardens, orchard and landscape features complement the buildings and aid our interpretation of three primary themes: Settlement as it relates to our Environment and the Technologies we use to adapt to life in Markham. Markham Museum connects the history of Markham to today’s new ‘settlers’ by examining our environment and the tools we use to adapt to our changing world. We deliver a dynamic series of programs which attracts 50,000 visitors annually, many of them for families with young children through our camp programs, exhibits, school programs, public programs. The site is also known as a unique setting for private event including weddings and corporate events.

The Museum Environmental Science Program Instructor will work within the Programming Department and will be responsible for two areas of program development and delivery at the Markham Museum during our peak summer season. The first area this position will be responsible for is the development, implementation and delivery of new curriculum based environmental science programming for our summer camp programs. The second area of focus would be the development of new educational programs relating to environmental sciences and family programming focused on to activating our 25 acres of parkland which can be used year round at the Museum. This includes the development and implementation of an education program to accompany our fall exhibition themed around agricultural innovation and sustainable food practices.

Job tasks include:

• Researches, develops and implements/delivers hands-on innovative and curriculum based environmental science programs for the museum’s summer camps incorporating the museum’s collections, three key themes and outdoor natural spaces (barn, gardens, apple orchard, pond).
• Researches, develops and implements outdoor family drop-in programs and an education program to accompany the Museum’s main fall exhibition themed around agricultural innovation and sustainable food practices.
• Based on the fall exhibition education program and family programs, create a Girl Guide/Scout program and an environment-focused birthday party program.
• Prioritizes participant and staff well-being, safety and protection throughout program design and training. Ensures the classroom, equipment and supplies are appropriate to the activity and environment to reduce and minimize risk to other staff and participants.
• Serves as an ambassador for the Corporation of the City of Markham, liaising with other departments/outside groups and resolving any issues with the support of the Museum Program Coordinator. Displays a heightened sense of customer service.
• Work with the Museum’s Summer Program Coordinator to train camp staff to be able to deliver general environmental science programming. Including the health & safety components of an activity and the educational theory behind the activity they are delivering.
• Provides regular updates and feedback to the Museum Program Coordinator.
• In consultation with the full-time Museum Program Coordinator and other senior members of the programming team, create training documents and presentation to accompany the education program designed to accompany the exhibition and the family drop-in outdoor programs.
• Along with the support of the Museum Summer Program Coordinator, control environmental science supplies and equipment inventory for activities, ensuring that all necessary supplies and equipment are ordered and received in accordance with City policies.
• Oversees and manages supply purchases and budget for environmental science supplies in accordance with City policies and budget.
• Reports all incidents promptly and thoroughly to the Museum Program Coordinator using incident/accident report forms and processes.
• Assists in the preparation of classroom and program materials as needed for the activities they are leading or designing.
• Completes all program related forms as required (i.e. accident report, maintenance work orders, etc.).
• Provide direction to staff and volunteers assisting with the program delivery.
• Completes a full report at the end of the summer including feedback and recommendations for future programming to the Museum Program Coordinator.
• Advises full-time Program Coordinator of any customer service issues, complaints or inquiries. Recommends program enhancements based on participant requests.
• Attends special events, both at the museum and off site, and outreach programs as required.
• Other duties as required.


Applicants should be a student pursuing a degree or diploma in Education, Biology, Environmental Sciences, Forestry and/or a related field and have:

• Experience program planning and delivering education programs;
• Knowledge of trends in outdoor education, sustainability and of specific museum/camp themes;
• Strong leadership, instructing, customer service and administrative skills;
• Superior communication and organization;
• Excellent writing skills;
• Have a general interest in Museums, Parks and informal outdoor education;
• Aptitude to deal directly with the public and participants of various ages in a professional manner;
• Current Standard First Aid and CPR Level 'C', and High Five PCHD certifications;
• Ability to provide an up to date Vulnerable Sector Screening form from their local police department;
• G Drivers License is an asset;
• Second language is asset.

Characteristics of Markham

The Museum is actively reaching out to our rapidly evolving community in all our activities. As the most diverse community in Canada, 69% of Markham residents were born elsewhere and 65% do not speak English or French as a first language. Markham’s population is 340,000. The community was founded in 1794 by settlers of German, Pennsylvania German and British ancestry. Primarily a farming community until the 1950s, the City first expanded as a bedroom community for Toronto and more recently, development is creating a unique urban centre with an economy built on high tech industries.
