Sackville is a small community of approximately 5,000 people, situated in South eastern New Brunswick, a largely rural community with an agricultural based economy. The Owens takes on an important civic role, serving as the only public, collecting art institution in the community. We direct a great deal of our energy and resources towards providing programs for local schoolchildren. The Town of Sackville is also home to an active arts community, due in large part to the presence of the Fine Arts Department at Mount Allison University; Struts Gallery, an artist-run centre; and the Galerie d’art, Universite de Moncton and Galerie Sans Nom which are twenty minutes away in Moncton.
The Owens Art Gallery is the oldest University art gallery in Canada, founded in 1895 on the campus of Mount Allison University. The Permanent Collection consist of approximately 3,000 works, including 18th, 19th and 20th century Canadian, American and European paintings and works on paper. There is also a large collection of contemporary Canadian art, including a good representation of work by artists of Atlantic Canada. The Gallery is open year round, seven days a week. Each summer, the Owens Art Gallery receives visitors from the United States, Canada and beyond who make Atlantic Canada their travel destination. During the summer the Gallery also serves as an important cultural venue for our local community, including children and young people.
