The Manitoba Museum is Manitoba’s largest heritage centre and number one paid tourist attraction. We are seeking a Collections & Conservation Assistant to work in the Department of Collections and Conservation for the summer.

The Department of Collections and Conservation is responsible for preserving the intellectual and physical integrity and condition of the Museum’s collections. Artifacts and natural history specimens are checked on a regular schedule and cleaned, repaired and maintained as necessary. Collections and Conservation Staff ensure that artifacts and specimens are properly handled and stored, and that objects receive the treatment necessary to prevent deterioration. They are responsible for all technical aspects related to monitoring storage and exhibit environments, pest control, air quality, exhibits installation, as well as education and training.

The incumbent will assist with the ongoing upgrade of collections and conservation record keeping systems at the Manitoba Museum which will entail cataloguing artifacts and specimens, completing condition reports, and entering information into the collection database. Additionally, the incumbent will assist with preventive conservation tasks related to maintaining collections in the galleries and in storage.

The candidate will have upper level University or College education in any of the following areas is preferred: Museum Studies, Humanities (History, Canadian Studies, Anthropology, Art History, Fine Arts) or Natural Sciences; experience working with artifacts and specimens is desirable; and computer proficiency, including MS Word, Excel, and databases is preferred; proficiency with digital camera is desirable; proficiency in spoken and written English is essential; positive teamwork experience, self-motivation, and organizational ability is desirable; strong interest in Manitoba’s human and natural history and First Aid/CPR training are assets.

The location of the job is Winnipeg and it is a full-time temporary position commencing June 12, 2017 continuing until August 25, 2017. The incumbent will report to the Manager of Collections and Conservation. Pay is $15.00 per hour, working Monday to Friday, 35 hours per week. Interviews will be conducted in May. This position is dependent upon funding from the Young Canada Works program. Applicants wishing to be considered for this job must be registered in the YCW in Heritage Organizations candidate inventory databank. YCW criteria state that candidates must be between the ages of 16 and 30 years; must be Canadian citizens, permanent residents or have refugee status in Canada; and be legally entitled to work in Canada.
