Position Title: Museum Assistant
Reports To: Museum Curator
Job Grade: Intern / Co-Op

Location of Work
The primary location of this position is the Craigleith Heritage Depot community museum.
Provide support services to the Curator in the areas of Exhibit Development and Collection
Management. Duties include cataloguing, photographing and storage of artifacts; data
entry; assisting with exhibit research and development, preparation and mounting;
community outreach and programs using the collection and other related resources.
Provide direct service to Museum and Library patrons, and deliver Museum programs as
required and assist with Library program delivery consistent with the policies, practices
and procedures of the Library.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
Under the supervision, direction and guidance of the Curator, the Museum Assistant has the
following duties and responsibilities:
Artifact cataloguing including data entry, photography, condition reporting, etc., and assist
with Collections Management.
Safe, secure storage of artifacts, record environmental readings, and provide preventative
Assist with receiving and shipments of exhibitions.
Exhibit research, development, preparation and mounting.
Assist with donations to the collection including liaising with donors.
Planning, delivering and promoting exhibits, including community exhibits and programs,
in coordination with the Curator and Library Programming staff.
Conduct Museum programs and special events, and assist with Library programs.
Liaise with community groups, historical societies, etc. to promote partnerships regarding
exhibits, the collection, etc.
Provide presentations and tours as required.
Assist with research requests, and provide Tourism services
Related duties as required.
Assist with the training and supervision of students and/or volunteers.
Work at the Circulation Desk, signing out, checking in, placing holds, collecting fines, reshelving
incoming items and noting their condition, setting aside those in need of repair,
maintaining the patron database, reserves and interlibrary loans.
Assist with Collection Development & Management functions as assigned including
weeding and shelving.
Advise patrons regarding reading material and museum, archives and library resources.
Assists patrons with information and multi- level reference questions and basic computer
Display and promote positive “Team Player” attitudes and actions. This includes positive
communications with supervisors and other Town staff regarding ideas and initiatives to
enhance the workplace improve policies, procedures and services.
Communicate with the public in an effective and courteous manner regarding programs,
policies, and procedures of the museum and the library.
Personally comply with all health and safety practices as they relate to the work, standard
operating guidelines and the Occupational Health & Safety Act. Personally comply with,
and assume appropriate supervisory responsibility for compliance with, all health and
safety practices as they relate to the Library, standard operating guidelines and the
occupational Health and Safety Act and applicable legislation
Sign and adhere to the Library’s Code of Conduct and Oath of Confidentiality
Submit a clean Criminal Record Check and Vulnerable Sector Search.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Hours of Work: This is a grant funded full-time, 35 hours per week for at least 20 weeks. .
Weekend and evening work required.

Education and Experience:
Community College Diploma in Museum Studies.
Experience with museum collections and exhibits is desirable.
Experience in public library work or any equivalent combination of experience and
training is desirable.
A valid driver’s license.
