The 2019 Canada Winter Games Red Deer Host Society is looking to fill the position of Student Intern, Legacy & Sustainability.

In February 2019, thousands of our country’s best and brightest will set their sights on Red Deer as we host the 2019 Canada Winter Games. Up to 3,600 participants from across Canada, 400 media, 500 VIPs, 500 officials and thousands of visitors will join us for the two-week event. Featuring 19 sports and a major arts and cultural festival, the 2019 Canada Games will be the largest event in Red Deer’s history.

The Student Intern, Legacy & Sustainability will provide coordination, integration, planning, development and operations support regarding sustainability and legacy projects for the Host Society. He/she will help the Host Society develop a plan for hosting a “Sustainable Games” and ensure best efforts to create a positive social, environmental and financial legacy.


Reporting to the Manager, Executive Office the Student Intern, Legacy & Sustainability will be responsible for, but not limited to, the following:

Research best practices and new technologies related to sustainability, corporate social responsibility and environmental monitoring

Identify interdependencies within the 2019 Canada Winter Games functional areas to execute the programs

Recommend effective corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives

Work closely with the Sustainability Committee to coordinate and execute the Sustainability Plan

Work closely with the Legacy Committee to coordinate and execute the Legacy Plan

Managing sustainable activities such as recycling, energy efficiency, and water conservation

Conducting an analysis of current policies, costs and benefits associated with implementing sustainable practices in the organization

Developing and implementing systems to measure the progress of legacy and sustainability initiatives

Engaging with a variety of stakeholders to ensure that their input is reflected in the organization’s sustainability policies and legacy plan

They will support planning, communication and execution of 3 major Sustainability projects:

Legacy Tree Planting Project, Bike Project, Mustard Seed Project


An undergraduate degree or diploma (or working towards) in science, biology, ecology, business, economics, environmental practice or other related fields.

Strong organizational, administration, planning and presentation skills.

Excellent communication skills, written and oral, in English is required and fluency in French is an asset

Experience with Google’s G Suite programs, Gmail, Docs, Slides, Calendar, etc. (or equivalent Microsoft Office programs) is required.

Demonstrated ability to set priorities and manage multiple projects

Ability to work in a team environment where duties and reporting levels are shared

Knowledge and experience working in a not-for-profit, events, sports or multi-sport Games environment is an asset


Hourly rate of $16.00/hour

While hours of work are 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m., Monday to Friday, the candidate may be required to work varied hours as needed, including occasional evenings and weekends, to support the planning and delivery of the Games

The position is funded by Young Canada Works in Both Official Languages. To be eligible to participate applicants must meet the following criteria:

A Canadian citizen, a permanent resident, or protected person under the Canadian Immigration and Refugee Protection Act and legally entitled to work and study in Canada

International students and Temporary Foreign Workers are not eligible

Enrolled in, and returning to, school in the Fall

Is available for full-time summer employment

Participates in only one position during the summer

Not immediately related to the owners or staff responsible for hiring in the organization
