Design Exchange is seeking to fill the full-time position of Design Instructor for 6 weeks. The Design Instructor will work with community groups and drop-in participants by providing design instruction to children, youth and community groups via Design Exchange programs including but not limited to: PA Kids Camps, Kids Days, and Community Outreach. The Design Instructor will also be participating in researching and developing future workshops. The Design Instructor will have the opportunity to take ownership of their programs, tailoring workshops to highlight their own skills and interests. They will be able to apply their skills and knowledge that they have recently learned in school and transform them into learning experiences for their own young students.

The Design Instructor will be supervised daily by the Programming Manager, with help from the Programming Coordinator and they are invited to share feedback and concerns at this time. The Design Instructor will also attend weekly meetings with the Creative Director to discuss upcoming work plans and current issues. Although existing workshops and public activities have prepared programs, the Design Instructor will be encouraged to interpret, add, or change projects and lesson plans as they feel appropriate.

Job responsibilities:

- supervision of children and youth

- instructing students and leading design-based projects

- set up and maintain all workshop materials

- coordinate with other Instructors


- a passion for the mandate and work of Design Exchange, strong knowledge of design and hands-on skills in creating physical art and design projects in a variety of media

- must be enrolled in a post-secondary design, art, or education program

- must have two years experience working with children or youth, ideally in design

- excellent interpersonal, teamwork, and leadership skills

- patience, understanding, and compassion for children and their parents

- knowledge of Canadian and international design is considered an asset

- a criminal background check is required

- CPR and First Aid certification is required

Successful candidates must meet the eligibility criteria for participation in the Young Canada Works program:

- legally entitled to work in Canada

- a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, or have refugee status in Canada

- note: non-Canadian students holding temporary work visas or awaiting permanent status are not eligible

- between the ages of 16 and 30 years of age at the start of employment

- registered in the YCW on-line candidate inventory

- willing to commit to the full duration of the work assignment

- do not have another full-time job (over 30 hours a week) while employed with YCW

- have been a full-time student (as defined by your educational institution) in the semester preceding the YCW job

- intend to return to full-time studies in the semester following the YCW job.
