(DOAK PROVINCIAL HERITAGE SITE - DOAKTOWN, NEW BRUNSWICK)
DESCRIPTION: On July 1, 2018 a new facility will open for the first time at the Doak Provincial Heritage Site in Doaktown. Built as a replica of an historic barn that stood on the site for over a century, the "new" barn will serve as a combination welcome center, exhibit hall, gift shop and reception area. Its displays will focus on the heritage of the Doaktown community since the late 1700s and the important role the Doak family has played in those events.
DUTIES: Working under the direct supervision of the Site Manager and in close consultation with staff members of the Provincial Department of Tourism, Heritage and Culture, to assist with all activities pertaining to the furnishing of the "barn" and, in particular, its displays and descriptive materials that will accompany them. Considerable research will be required to select and/or identify artifacts intended for display so that the history of the Doaktown community can be presented in an interesting and informative way. The successful candidate will also be asked to develop data bases pertaining to various matters, and for preparing media announcements on a regular basis. Finally, he/she will be responsible for conducting tours of the premises on an as-required basis.
COMPENSATION: 40 hours per week@ $11.00. Term of employment: 16 Weeks (Monday, May 7 - Saturday, August 25, 2018).
QUALIFICATIONS: Excellent research, report writing and computer skills. A love of history and, in particular, a knowledge of the heritage of the Central Miramichi Area would be definite assets. An above-average ability to assess new situations, to understand the project requirements, and to recognize key pieces of information and how they could be utilized. Excellent communication skills, both oral and on paper. Strong ability to meet deadlines and to problem-solve. Able to work effectively in a largely unsupervised environment. A driver's license is essential and first-aid training would be a definite asset. Above all, a candidate who can see the potential offered by this project and who will be enthusiastic about playing a role in bringing it to fruition. NOTE: Please be aware that the availability of apartments and other rental accommodation is extremely limited in the Central Miramichi area, making a commute from either the City of Fredericton or the City of Miramichi the only viable alternative.
REQUIREMENTS: Candidates must be legally entitled to work in Canada and be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or have refugee status in Canada. Must be between 16-30 years of age and have been a full-time student in the semester preceding their hiring with the intention of returning to full-time studies in the semester following their employment. Be willing to commit to the full duration of the work assignment and not have another full-time job (over 30 hours a week) while employed with the Doak Site.
