Are you an individual that loves history, pays attention to detail, and loves touching things that are old, and learning all about them?

The Fort la Reine Museum is looking for a highly motivated student who would love to work in a historic setting, restoring some of our heritage log structures that date to as early as 1879. Are you interested in architecture, restoration, museum conservation, log building, or basic pioneer carpentry work? If you are and have a great work ethic, we’d love to have you work for us this summer, and share your love for history and passion for culture and heritage by assisting as a Fort la Reine Museum’s Conservation Assistant of Historic Architecture/Buildings. You will develop excellent experience in assessment, evaluation according to nationally recognized historic structures criteria, and work experience in the restoration of plaster chinking, replacement of logs, rotted timbers, and some glass panes.

Qualifications:
-Candidates have a real thrist, and love of history
-Strong oral and written communications skills
-Post secondary experience in architecture, carpentry, building, history, the humanities, art history, natural history.
-Knowledge or demonstrated interest in culture, art, Canadian Heritage, and its conservation.
-Excellent skills in English are required.


Duties:
Description of Tasks:
-Deliver an assessment of our historic structures according to the Standards and Guidelines for the Conservation of Historic Places in Canada, and the criteria in “Evaluation of Historic Buildings” (Parks Canada)
-Coordinate and train with a log building consultant and the Chief Curator to identify the work priorities
-Accomplish basic removal of damaged chinking, repair, and application of new log chinking between the logs, of the heritage log houses.
-Conduct independent research, reading on proper restoration recipes, techniques and standards.
-Assist with repairs of rotten timbers, panes, sills, and windows when necessary.
-Assist with general conservation and care of the three heritage log structures in our Museum environment.

Training and Scheduling:
The Conservation Assistant will be provided with training by a Log building Consultant, the Chief Museum Curator, mentoring by previous staff, and the Museum carpenter/builder. Measurable outcomes will be the evaluation, assessment, and restoration of our heritage log structures; The Paul House; The Trading Post; The Hourie House; The Trappers Cabin. The Fort la Reine Museum will provide training and orientation to the Museum, its collections , staff, and on the job mentoring concerning the care and conservation of collections and all logistics. Education, training, and support will be ongoing throughout the season. The work week will include weekends and holidays.

Special Requirements:
All candidates must be full time current university, community college or highschool students who will return to school in the fall of 2017. All successful candidates must be between the ages of 16 and 30 years of age. Own transportation is a must as the museum is located 4km East of Portage la Prairie city centre. Orientation and training:
Orientation and training:
The Fort la Reine Museum will provide training and orientation to the Museum, its collections, staff and on the job care and conservation and logistics. Education, training, and support will be ongoing throughout the season. The Museum will also provide expert log builders offering insight and training , following the standards and guidelines for conservation of historic places, to the student conservation assistant. The work week will include weekends and holidays. New staff will be trained by experienced past staff, as well as the Museum Curator/Manager for the first week, and ongoing throughout the season as needed, or desired. Manitoba workplace safety and rules are explained and followed. With software manuals and proper policy manuals concerning general operations, collections care, as well as in person training by the curator, interpreters will be groomed in museum collections care and management.

Supervision:


The Manager/Curator interacts with staff on a daily basis, and is accessible, monitors performance, and assists in training and problem solving according to best museum practices. The Museum follows all Manitoba workplace safety and health codes and policies. Senior staff members are staffed in the absence of the curator. The Museum will also have expert log builders offering insight and training to the student conservation assistant.

Portage la Prairie is an agricultural community of about 14,000 which has a regional trading area population of about 55,000 people. The city is located 75 km west of Winnipeg on the Trans-Canada Highway.
