Job Title: Summer Children’s Program Assistant
These positions will engage children in literacy-based activities and promote a love of reading in children. They will encourage newcomer children to practice English and reading during the summer months. Students will also work toward the objective of assisting children in the community to maintain and enhance their reading levels over the summer months.
Education: Must be a full-time college, university, or secondary school student returning to an academic program in the fall.
Skills: A demonstrated interest and ability to work with children.
Organized, with the ability to pay attention to detail.
Creative and artistic abilities would be an asset.
Duties: 1. Implementation of a summer reading incentive program. This involves working one-on-one with children, listening to oral book reports, encouraging children to read, assisting with Reading Buddies, and organizing supplies.
2. Assisting library staff with program preparations, including craft and activity preparations.
3. Assisting library staff with website data entry.
City Profile: The City of Cambridge has an estimated population of 126,748 and is expected to grow to over 180,000 by 2031. It is estimated that there are 46,500 households, forecasted to reach 51, 196 by 2017. With a population of just over half a million, the Region of Waterloo is one of the fastest growing areas in Ontario and is projected to grow from 542,100 in 2010 to 729,000 people by 2031.
Cambridge is part of the Region of Waterloo and newcomers are arriving in the region in greater numbers, including over 1000 Syrian refugees and their families in 2016. Waterloo Region has the 12th largest visible minority population in Canada and 7th in Ontario.
Start Date: Monday June 19, 2017
End Date: Friday, August 18, 2017
Duration: 9 weeks
Schedule: 2 positions (30 hours per week). All schedules include daytime and evening shifts.
Location: One position located at Queens Square Branch and one position located at Hespeler Branch
