The successful candidate will work closing with professional archivists to process an assortment of private collections and fonds, from businesses, organizations and individuals. They will work through each stage of the archival process, from acquisition (including visiting donors, picking up records, negotiating terms of transfer), to accessioning records (gaining initial intellectual control over the material), appraisal (selecting records to be retained), and arrangement and description (based on archival principles of provenance and original order). They will be exposed to a variety of small collections which will enable them to experience the nuances and complexities that can be encountered in each of the above areas, providing them with a wealth of experience in the practical realities of archival work, while grounding them in the basics of archival theory and principles, which guide decision making. The collections to be worked on also include a variety of formats and will also teach them how to identify basic preservation needs.
