Halifax Public Libraries is inviting applications for a 14 week winter co-op placement for students currently enrolled in an MLIS program.

Community is at the heart of all that Halifax Public Libraries undertakes. Comprised of 14 branch libraries, we serve the 400,000 citizens of Halifax with our collection of 1 million items and a wide range of programming. Halifax Public Libraries blends the best of traditional library services with innovative programs, spaces and technologies, attracting more than 3 million in-person visits each year.

THE OPPORTUNITY
We are looking for 1-3 co-op students to take on a variety of interesting and challenging projects that may range from community engagement initiatives with the francophone community; at risk communities or newcomers; evaluating and expanding indigenous and multi-lingual collections or assisting with the development of a web portal to record community stories and history. Specific responsibilities and Branch location will be determined based on the interests, experience and skillsets of the student.

YOUR QUALIFICATIONS
You are currently enrolled in the MLIS program at a recognized university and you have demonstrated a passion for public library service and a desire to learn and practice community engagement. You are up-to-date on current technology, social media and other public library trends. You are flexible and able to work independently as well as a member of a team. You have experience in public speaking and have excellent communication skills. You are keen to connect with communities, delivering service in new and innovative ways.

PLACEMENT DETAILS

Number of Positions: 1-3

Employment Period: January - April (14 weeks)

Hours of Work: 35 hours per week; Evening and weekend work is required

Salary: $22.50 per hour

Interview: Interviews will be conducted via Skype
