The Mann Art Gallery in Prince Albert, SK seeks an Indigenous Gallery Education Intern for a 6-month internship (Oct. 2 - Mar. 23, 2018). For more information about the gallery and city, please visit www.mannartgallery.ca and www.citypa.ca.

The Indigenous Gallery Education Intern is a new position designed to support the MAG in maintaining and increasing opportunities for Indigenous engagement, content, and culturally relevant learning strategies in our public programs which serves over 3,800 participants annually.

Candidate Profile: The ideal candidate self-identifies as Indigenous, ideally from one of the Nations historically in the Prince Albert, SK area: Cree, Dene, Dakota, Metis. Cree, Dene, French language skills would be ideal but are not required. The ideal candidate has experience working with Elders, traditional knowledge keepers, and Indigenous groups in urban and rural environments.

The internship encompasses three projects:

1. Maintain and Expand Current iMAGine Arts Programs
Objective: Increase Indigenous participation and content; lead public programs.
Assist the Gallery Educator to continue to identify and increase communication with local and regional Indigenous groups and schools; assess and strategize to determine how the MAG may better serve and assist these groups in accessing relevant visual arts education opportunities; Assist the Gallery Educator in designing and leading Gallery Tour + Activity Programs for all groups, and assisting with all scheduled gallery programs each month; assisting in increasing and enhancing Indigenous content, teaching/learning traditions, and cultural relevancy in the Gallery Tour + Activity Program, Seniors Art Outreach, Accessibility Programs, Free Family Art Drop-In Days, Professional Development Workshops, etc.

2. Develop an Indigenous Youth Summer Art Workshop (IYSAW)
Objective: Plan a new IYSAWfor Prince Albert and surrounding rural First Nations/Indigenous communities/reservesfor summer 2018 to replace a previous workshop

Review previous IYSAW delivered for past 3 years; communicate with stakeholders and community leaders to develop a new workshop; secure funding through grants and sponsorships; secure artists and locations. Possibility for Intern to be one of the workshop facilitators in summer 2018 for continued experience and income.

3. Collection Spotlight: Indigenous Artists in the MAG Permanent Collection

Objective: Promote & disseminate information about Indigenous artists and artworks
Compile a preliminary report on Indigenous artworks in the MAG Permanent Collection. Create a “Collection Spotlight: Indigenous Artists” brochure listing and highlighting these artists and works, with three accompanying Educational Activities/ Discovery Topics. Upload this information to Virtual Museums of Canada (VMC) and Canadian Heritage and Information Network (CHIN).


Education Requirements: BA in Visual Arts, Art History, Indigenous/Native Studies, or related field; B. Ed with teachable subjects in Art, History, Social Studies; Diploma or college degree in related field (community outreach, recreation program coordinator, community/social support etc.); Knowledge of both contemporary and historical art, art processes, and techniques is an important asset.

Skills / Abilities:
• The candidate should be intelligent and organized, be able to work with people of varying ages, ethnicities, cultural backgrounds, and physical and intellectual abilities.
• Enjoys working directly with the public; outgoing; confident in leading group activities.
• excellent communication and writing skills
• Knowledge of Windows computer systems, word processing, and photo editing software is essential.
• A valid driver's license will be required.
• Must be a graduate of a college or university within the last 24 months
• Must complete a Criminal Records Vulnerable Sector Check to determine if able to safely work with individuals in the Vulnerable Sector (children; individuals with disabilities; elderly). Existence of a criminal record may not prevent candidate from employability if able to pass the Vulnerable Sector Check.
• Demonstrated interest in arts / crafts / traditional cultural & heritage activities
