Gallery Stratford is the only public art gallery in Stratford, ON and the surrounding Perth County. The gallery is currently looking for an Assistant Curator of Exhibitions and Public Programs through the Young Canada Works – Building Careers in Heritage program. The Assistant Curator of Exhibitions and Public Programs will assist Gallery Stratford in enhancing and developing our exhibition and educational programs as well as documenting and cataloguing our collection of 1000 works of Canadian modern and contemporary art.

The Assistant Curator of Exhibitions and Public Programs will have the opportunity to participate in a variety of opportunities and activities that range from curating exhibitions, working with artists, documenting and photographing our collection, assisting with educational program development and implementation, social media marketing, public relations, and event planning. Gallery Stratford has a small professional staff that work collaboratively as a team, but at the same time allows staff members to take ownership of individual projects and programs. This position provides the opportunity to work as an integral team member, but also to initiate and develop individual projects.

The Assistant Curator of Exhibitions and Public Programs will work closely with the Director / Curator and the Curator of Exhibitions and Education. Specific responsibilities include:
- Provide research support for upcoming exhibitions
- Assist with the design and installation of the Winter and Spring exhibitions
- Help create marketing and media campaigns for Winter and Spring exhibitions as well as the educational and public programs
- Coordinate a lecture series to support the Winter and Spring exhibitions
- Assist with the documentation and digital cataloguing of our permanent collection
- Regularly promote exhibitions and gallery events on social media
- Help take the lead in the development of one of the Spring exhibitions
- Assist with visitor services, rotating with other staff members on the Front Desk
- Provide support to major fundraising event that occurs in February
- Working closely with Gallery Stratford staff on the daily operation of the gallery

The ideal candidate should possess the following skills:
Excellent written and oral communication skills
Knowledge of museum / gallery sector
Knowledge and interest in the arts and desire for a career in the museum or art gallery field
Enjoy working with the public
Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint
Familiarity with Photoshop or other graphics, illustration software
Ability to work in a team environment
Ability to work independently
Willingness to work weekends and evenings and in both indoor and outdoor settings
Recent graduate of a fine arts or museum studies program at the undergraduate or graduate level.

Gallery Stratford's Director / Curator together with the Curator of Exhibitions and Education will review applications and conduct interviews in late September 2017 and will work together to train and mentor the successful applicants.


The Assistant Curator of Exhibitions and Public Programs will work 35 hours per week for 26 weeks from October 2, 2017 to March 30, 2018
