MUSEE BYTOWN MUSEUM is celebrating its 100th Anniversary in 2017. It is the oldest Community Museum in Ottawa and Region. The celebration is part of and complements ‘Canada 150’ celebrations and ‘Ottawa 2017’ events. The BYTOWN MUSEUM plans to continue is 100th Anniversary celebration by developing special ’Birthday Bash’ on its actual birthday, a special lecture series extending well into 2018, a new school program on Ottawa's Aboriginal Peoples and proactively participate in Doors Open Ottawa 2018. The Museum is in Ottawa’s oldest stone building, the Commissariat, which was built in 1827. The Museum is on the Rideau Canal, at the Ottawa Locks and is part of the National Historical Site of Canada, the National River designation, and the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Rideau Canal from Ottawa to Kingston, Ontario.

The BYTOWN MUSEUM was founded by the Women’s Canadian Historical Society who started the collection in 1898 and founded the Museum in 1917. The Museum’s first main building was the former Registry Office Building of the City of Ottawa on Nicolas Street (in front of Arts Court). WCHSO moved the Museum into the Commissariat Building in 1951.

The building and site are of National and local heritage significance. The history of the Museum is of local and national historical importance.

The Canadian Museums Association’s Young Canada Works sponsored internship is focused on the development and implementation of programs and events involved in the 100th Anniversary of the BYTOWN MUSEUM and beyond, including a special Birthday celebration event on October 25, 2017, an Ottawa History themed lecture series in the Fall of 2017 and Spring of 2018, a new school program on Ottawa’s Aboriginal Peoples and Doors Open 2018 weekend programming, All of the Museum’s programs and events not only celebrate the Museum’s 100 Years of Service to Ottawa, but also contribute to ‘Canada 150’ and ‘Ottawa 2017’ and further the celebration of the oldest community museum in Ottawa. The Intern will develop in detail the Birthday Bash, the lecture series, the new school program and initiated the Museum’s participation in Doors Open Ottawa 2018.

The end result will be far reaching programs and information sharing that will enliven the Museum’s 2017 and 2018 events and programs, but also inform all future programs and exhibitions at the BYTOWN MUSEUM, in its service to the community and to Canada.

Minimum Requirements:
• Minimum of one year completed in post-secondary education in Museum Studies, History, Public History, Education or suitable equivalent
• Passion for working with the public, passion for history and research, passion for public and educational programing, outgoing personality and some customer service experience
• Proven ability to communicate effectively with your colleagues and the public
• Interest in the history of Bytown, Ottawa and the Rideau Canal. Knowledge of Canadian History
• Interest in Event planning and management
• Demonstrated ability to work as a team, assume initiative and work independently
• Strong fluency in both French and English is mandatory

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:
The specific duties and responsibilities of your internship/employment will involve the following:
• Incorporate the research of the Commissariat Building on the Rideau Canal at the Ottawa Locks and the former City of Ottawa Registry Office Building on Nicholas Street into the programs and events.
• Incorporate the research of the architectural history of both the Commissariat Building and the former Registry Office Building into the programs and events.
• Incorporate the research of the establishment and development and history of the BYTOWN MUSEUM into the programs and events.
• Incorporate the research of the history of the Rideau Canal, including the National Historical Site designation, the National Historical River designation and the UNESCO World Heritage into the programs and events.
• Incorporate the research of new Lock -Talk tours along the Rideau Canal, including the history of the Ottawa River and Entrance Bay (where Bytown, now the City of Ottawa Began!) into the programs and events.
• Incorporate the research of the Aboriginal Peoples of the area into a school program (and tours in general)
• Develop in detail and coordinate the following four main programs and events that celebrate the BYTOWN MUSEUM’s 100 Anniversary:
o BYTOWN MUSEUM’s Birthday on October 25, 2017! Develop and schedule the following:
 Special school and youth programming the week of October 24-28, 2017
 An AMAZING BIRTHDAY BASH! on Saturday, October 29, 2017 (cake, refreshments, musicians and performances and special tours. Speeches, presentations and political and community leaders (Museum Members, Board, Volunteers, former Museum Staff, Historical Society of Ottawa members).

o Special Ottawa History Themed Lecture Series: Aboriginal Peoples, Archaeology of the Region, The History of the Rideau Canal and its Impact on Ottawa and Canada’s Growth, Confederation and Ottawa as Capital of Canada, Ottawa as a Multi-Cultural Urban Centre in the Context of the Global Society and The Future of Ottawa and the BYTOWN MUSEUM
o New School Program: History of Aboriginal Peoples in the Ottawa Area
o Doors Open Ottawa 2018 (June 2-3): extraordinary tours of the Commissariat Building; Children’s programming and activities; music and storytelling programming on site (at the Museum);

• Work with the Visitor Services Officers and permanent staff, other interns and volunteers who are working at the Museum.
• Other duties as required and assigned, including basic operational duties.


Assets:
• Knowledge of current museum practices as they relate to programming and visitor research
• Enjoys meeting, working and conversing with people of all ages, race and backgrounds
• Experience researching, giving tours, family programs and facilitating events to a range of audiences
• Experience marketing programs, events and activities through Press Releases, Social Media and other marketing initiatives
• Experience planning and coordinating public events
• Knowledge of Ontario curriculum and designing creating curriculum based programs for school aged children
• Proficiency in writing, photography and Photoshop
• Knowledge of language other than English and French

The Intern: 2017 -2018 Programming Assistant position runs from October 2, 2017 to March 30, 2018, working 37.5 hours/week.

Interviews will be conducted in both official languages.

Candidates must meet Young Canada Works (YCW) eligibility requirements. You are eligible if you:
- are legally entitled to work in Canada
- are between 16 and 30 years of age at start of employment
- have finished the school term at the start of employment
-meet the specific eligibility criteria of the program to which you apply
-are registered in the YCW online candidate inventory
- are willing to commit to the full duration of the work assignment
- do not have another full-time job (over 30 hours a week) while employed with YCW
