YCW Assistant Programmer, Schools & Families History & Heritage Project (1 October 2017 -31 March 2018)
The Education and Public Programs department at The Robert McLaughlin Gallery is currently seeking applications for a recent graduate Intern position. Responsibilities include designing and delivering art education that is adapted for all ages and abilities in a gallery setting. Our Intern will work closely with RMG staff to develop, adapt and deliver thematic gallery and school based programming and resources that engages young learners and families to look at, think and talk about Indigenous art and the rich history of Oshawa through the RMG’s permanent collections and special exhibitions. If you are passionate about animating Canadian history, genuinely engaging community voices, have a strong work ethic and a great sense of humour we would love to hear from you!

Other responsibilities include:
- Attending training sessions and exhibition talks as needed
- Conducting independent research on artists, art movements and exhibitions
- Instructing and supervising children who are in the care of the Gallery
- Developing and leading the provision of meaningful activities for our dedicated family space
- Consulting with our Indigenous partners on programming content and authentic practices
- Taking part in community engagement strategies
- Taking part in RMG Health and Safety training and other RMG policies
- Recognizing and managing a medical emergency should it occur, and taking precautions for risk reduction and prevention (training provided)
- Upon hiring, Our Intern is required to obtain a valid police record check with Vulnerable Sector Screening

QUALIFICATIONS
- Meet the Eligibility Requirements of YCW: Is a graduate of post-secondary education in the previous 24 months prior to the position start date in October 2017, having pursued a postgraduate diploma or degree in fine arts (visual arts), education, art education, museum studies, art history or related field
• Knowledge of art-making techniques using a variety of medium
• Experience as a visual artist and/or art instructor
• Experience working with and teaching art to toddlers, children and teens
• Enthusiasm, creativity and a commitment to provide a positive experience for people of all ages and abilities
• Experience in program development
• Strong communication and leadership skills
• A proven ability to work independently as well in a team
• Responsibility, punctuality and reliability
• A recent graduate from a degree program – Fine arts, Art history, Art Education, Education, Museum studies, Museum management, and possess relevant work experience
• Ability to conduct research using a variety of methods (on-line, books and catalogues, etc...)
• Proficiency in all Microsoft office applications

Experience in the following areas is a strong asset:
• Experience with community engagement projects/settings
• Experience working in a museum or gallery setting
• Experience working with children with disabilities
• Knowledge of Canadian art history and Indigenous art practices

SALARY AND HOURS
This full-time position is from. 1 October 2017 -31 March 2018. Hours fluctuate and average 35 hrs per week, Monday to Friday. Hourly rate of pay is $15.00/hr. Applicants with disabilities may request a reduced schedule.
