Mission and Mandate of the Host Organization
In the spirit of our founders, Peter and Catharine Whyte, the Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies acquires, preserves, interprets and makes accessible the history and culture of the Rocky Mountains of Canada by inspiring and cultivating the exchange of knowledge and ideas through our collections, programs and exhibitions.

The Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies is a progressive and creative organization with an international reputation for excellence. It reflects its cultural roots in the Canadian Rockies by developing and managing its collections for preservation, accessibility and programming.

The Whyte Museum galleries and museum shop is open 7 days a week from 10-5pm, and the Archives and Library, a department within the museum, is open to the public for researchers Tuesday-Friday. There are 4 galleries: one is a permanent exhibit "Gateway to the Rockies" which showcases the history of the Canadian Rockies using artworks, artifacts, archival photographs and documents and rare books from our various museum collections. The other 3 galleries house temporary exhibitions that are changed 2-3 times per year. These exhibitions are curated primarily by our Curator of Art and Curator of Photography, but also include guest curators and travelling exhibitions. We provide educational programming and tours to the visitors of the museum as well as to school groups and other organizations. In addition to evening programs which showcase the museum's collections and exhibitions, our programming offers the opportunity for further education and exchange of ideas through various guest speakers. The Archives and Library holdings offer a comprehensive study of the human and natural history of the Canadian Rockies, which is accessible through our Archives and Library Reference Service. In addition to the Whyte Museum Archives and Archives Library, the Whyte Museum is also the custodian of the Alpine Club of Canada Library. Professionally staffed, the Head Archives and Library, Archivist and Reference Archivist/Librarian facilitate the researchers and offer reproduction services of archival images for personal and commercial use.

The Whyte Museum is seeking an individual interested in mountain culture, the history of the Canadian Rocky Mountains, and the preservation of documentary heritage to assist in processing archival collections as well as participate in the research, selection and digitization of archival materials, and the creation of relevant, engaging, and thematic digital exhibits that draw on the Whyte Museum's collections. The digital exhibits will be accessible through the Whyte Museum's digital vault in order to make accessible the history and culture of the Canadian Rocky Mountains.
This position will require significant research into the Whyte Museum's archival holdings; some assistance in the processing, arrangement and description, and preventive conservation/preservation of archival materials, and the creation of finding aids; digital content development - selection of exhibit materials and digitization of selected material (textual, photographic, sound); the preparation of exhibit copy; exhibit design and display in the Museum's digital vault.

Characteristics of city/region

The Town of Banff is located in Banff National Park, Canada’s first national park located 1.5 hours from Calgary Alberta Canada, 20 minutes from Canmore Alberta, and 40 minutes from the world-famous Lake Louise. Surrounded by the Canadian Rockies, residents and visitors have the opportunity to enjoy mountain sports in all seasons: hiking, mountain climbing, cycling, canoeing, camping, down-hill skiing/snowboarding, ski-touring, and snowshoeing. There is a strong arts and culture scene with the Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies, the Banff Centre, artsPlace (Canmore) and numerous other art galleries and museums in the Bow Valley. But the thrill of seeing wildlife in its natural habitat and experiencing the beauty of the spectacular mountains and glacier-fed lakes is, without doubt, the major highlight for all who experience Banff.
