The Jewish Museum and Archives of British Columbia (JMABC), administered by The Jewish Historical Society of British Columbia (JHSBC), is seeking an Archives Intern for the second phase of the processing of the Canadian Jewish Congress, Pacific Region (CJCPR) fonds. The internship will commence October 16th, 2017 and end March 6th, 2018 (20 paid work weeks). As part of the mandate of the JMABC, the archives documents, acquires and preserves archival records, thereby safeguarding the history of the Jewish community of British Columbia. As the JMABC’s work place and visitor base is largely English speaking, the language for the project is English. The Jewish Museum and Archives of BC is administered by The Jewish Historical Society of British Columbia (JHSBC) and is located in the Peretz Centre for Secular Jewish Culture in Vancouver, BC.

Canadian Jewish Congress, Pacific Region fonds
The Canadian Jewish Congress, Pacific Region fonds (ca. 1969-2001) consists of approximately 32 metres of textual records relating to the administration and operations of the Canadian Jewish Congress, Pacific Region. Also included are records generated by CJC committees on such matters as Jewish education and culture, the Holocaust, parliamentary affairs, community relations, immigration, kashrut, right-wing organizations operating in Canada and a host of other areas of concern to the Jewish community. The JMABC completed phase one of processing the Canadian Jewish Congress, Pacific Region fonds in 2016-2017 with the work of a YCW intern and hopes to successfully complete phase two in 2017-2018. As the CJCPR fonds is the single largest fonds within the JMABC it was necessary for the project to be broken into phases, with general arrangement and box listings having been created in phase one. Now onto phase two, the fonds are ready for file-level arrangement, description, and the creation of a finding aid to be available online. This second phase will also see the completion of rehousing all the materials to acid-free folders and archival boxes.

The first meeting of the Canadian Jewish Congress (CJC) took place in Montreal on March 16-19, 1919. In 1934 CJC operations in British Columbia began. The office, however, was officially part of the larger Canadian Jewish Congress, Western Region that included all of the three Prairie Provinces plus British Columbia. In 1949 Esmond Lando, the President of the British Columbia office of the CJC, presented the 1949 Plenary Assembly with a resolution calling for the creation of a separate Pacific Region of the Canadian Jewish Congress. The petition was granted and the separation of the B.C. office from the Western Region took place in that same year.

The Pacific Region office of Canadian Jewish Congress represented the Jewish community throughout British Columbia, the Yukon and the Northwest Territories. It acted as the representative body to all levels of government and non-government groups in the region. It promoted inter-group relations and the growth of a spirit of toleration, understanding and goodwill between all segments of society. It combats anti-Semitism and racism. It was committed to preserving and strengthening Jewish life throughout the province and territories. It stressed the centrality of Israel for Jews and Judaism and fosters concern for the status of Jewish communities abroad.
