COLLECTIONS ASSISTANT INTERNSHIP

$20/hour, 30 hours per week, 25 weeks
Starts July 17th, 2017 and ends January 12th, 2018

The Canmore Museum & Geoscience Centre is a small but active museum in the Rocky Mountain town of Canmore, Alberta. The focus of the museum collection and exhibits is the people and geographical history of the Canmore area.

We are seeking an intern to work in the Collections area. This position works directly with the Collections Manager and deals with the over 12,000 objects and photographs in storage and on display. The position requires someone with a University background in Museum Studies, preferably Collections Management. The candidate must be self-motivated, conscientious, with a strong attention to detail and the ability to focus for long periods of time. Research is a key component to the work involved, as is dealing with a database and proper records management and data entry.

This is an ideal opportunity to gain practical hands-on experience and skill in Museum Collections Management.

Duties Include:
- Working with artifacts, archival materials, maps, and historic photographs and dealing with care, preservation, organization, documentation and information management
- Assisting with internal and external research requests
- re-housing artifacts for proper storage
- sorting and organizing internal records, and conducting research where information may be lacking
- researching and designing 2 small temporary exhibits

Qualifications:
- courteous, reliable, outgoing and possess excellent communication skills, verbal and written
- strong organizational skills and a great attention to detail
- fluency in English
- proficiency in Word and Excel required
- an understanding of databases is preferred, but the willingness to learn is essential
- working with a camera and photo editing software are assets, as is a general knowledge of and interest in western Canadian History
- the applicant must be a graduate from a degree or diploma program concerned with Museum Studies and should be familiar with professional Canadian museum standards for collections
- preference will be given to applicants with hands on experience in museum collections management
- the applicant must have the understanding that the work involved requires some lifting (30 pounds) and may sometimes be in dusty or dirty environments
- the position is open to all equity groups, persons in a wheelchair may be considered, though collections storage areas are not specifically wheelchair accessible
- credentials and references will be checked, preferences will be given to candidates who exhibit good work ethics, and a professional, cooperative and inclusive manner

This position is supported by Young Canada Works, applicants must: be a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident, or have refugee status in Canada (non-Canadians holding temporary work visas or awaiting permanent status are not eligible); be legally entitled to work in Canada; be between 16 and 30 years of age at the start of employment; be willing to commit to the full duration of the work assignment; not have another full-time job (over 30 hours a week) while employed with the program; be unemployed or underemployed college or university graduate, that is, not employed full-time; be a recent graduate who has graduated from college or university within the last 24 months at the start of employment; not be receiving Employment Insurance (EI) benefits while employed with the program; and have not previously participated in or been paid under this or any other Career Focus internship program funded under the Government of Canada's Youth Employment Strategy.
