Cryptogam Herbarium (ALTA) Database Assistantship

The Cryptogamic Herbarium (ALTA), Department of Biological Sciences, University of Alberta is seeking an energetic and diligent student who is passionate about learning about our Canadian bryophyte flora and is interested in archiving of this legacy through helping to process, accession and database the specimens in component of the Cryptogamic Herbarium. The collection includes over 200,000 cryptogams from around the world and represents the 3rd largest bryophyte collection in Canada. The focus of the current project will be on the circumpolar material. This effort will contribute to the essential knowledge base and stewardship of Canada's biota, with a special urgency in compiling data from the Canadian North. Enrollment in an undergraduate university/college program or an undergraduate degree. Preference for candidates with botanical coursework. Job qualifications include: knowledge of plant specimens (i.e., bryophytes/lichens); knowledge of scientific nomenclature; use of software and some database program; use of online database resource information (i.e., Getty Thesaurus of Geographic Names, Tropicos, Bryophyte Flora of North America, IUCN Red List of Threatened Species and SARA listings of species per province/territory); mapping accuracy determination: ability to evaluate data; fluency of English; additional language skills would be of benefit for translation skills (i.e., French, German, Chinese, Russian, Polish, Hungarian); physical ability to retrieve specimens from the collection and refile them; use of a step ladder; good communication skills. The job requires the ability to climb a step ladder and refile specimens.
