Job Title: Junior Naturalist Camp Leader
Location: MUN Botanical Garden, 306 Mount Scio Road, St. John's, NL
Wage: $13.40 per hour (35 hours per week)
Duration: May 8 - August 25, 2017 (16 weeks)

Job Description:
Working under the supervision of the Interpretation Coordinator, the successful applicant will assist in the planning, research, development, registration, promotion, delivery and assessment of the MUN Botanical Garden Summer Junior Naturalist Camp Program. This program offers children an opportunity to explore Newfoundland natural and cultural history through nature hikes, exploration, activities, games, crafts, and adventures. The successful applicant will also assist in the delivery of family programs, general tours, special events and the spring school program. Outdoor work is required. Weekend work is required.
Qualifications:
- field of study in the areas of natural sciences (botany, zoology, ecology) and/or education
- excellent communication skills, including public speaking experience
- experience in interpreting cultural and natural history to youth (ages 5 - 14)
- knowledge of Windows, Microsoft Office, and general computer skills
- artistic skills (i.e. crafts, music, illustrations, photography, storytelling) an asset
- knowledge of Newfoundland natural and cultural heritage an asset
- currently enrolled as a full-time student at Memorial University of Newfoundland
The successful candidate is required to provide a current certificate of conduct, issued by the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary within 30 days of starting work.
Note: To be considered, interested candidates must register in the Young Canada Works on-line candidate inventory and meet all eligibility criteria, including: legally entitled to work in Canada; be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or have refugee status in Canada; be between 16 and 30 years of age at the start of employment; meet the eligibility criteria of the program for which you have been approved; be registered in the YCW candidate inventory; be willing to commit to the full duration of the work assignment; not have another full-time job (over 30 hours a week) while employed with YCW; must have been a full-time student (as defined by their educational institutions) in the semester preceding their job with YCW; and intend to return to full-time studies in the semester following their job with YCW.

Background Information:
Memorial University Botanical Garden (formerly called Oxen Pond Botanic Park) was established by the university in 1971 as a nature reserve and botanical garden, with a focus on research and education in the areas of Newfoundland natural history and horticulture. Opened to the public since 1977, the Garden consists of six acres of cultivated gardens within a 110 acre managed nature reserve, complete with a series of nature trails that meander through a variety of Newfoundland habitats, including bog, fen, pond, northern boreal forest, and barrens. The Garden offers a full range of education programs and events for a wide range of audiences, including families, children, seniors, adults, as well as school and community organizations.
