Job Title: Outreach & Program Assistant, Salt Spring Arts Council, Salt Spring Island, BC


The following job is open to College or University Students only, who are returning to full time studies in the fall.


Overview of the Position:


The Salt Spring Arts Council (SSAC) celebrates 50 years of promoting and celebrating the arts in our vibrant community. SSAC serves our Salt Spring Island community by offering a wide array of arts programs. SSAC operates and maintains historic Mahon Memorial Hall in the heart of Ganges village - the Hall is home to our gallery, programs and offices. The Outreach & Program Assistant will gain experience working in a dynamic arts service organization by supporting the operations of summer programs and community outreach. The Assistant will support operations of Artcraft (the SSAC-run local artisan gallery), and will also support the planning and delivery of two Summer Art Camps for kids. Community outreach duties throughout the summer will consist of assisting members with technical aspects of listing on the Art Directory, managing the Saturday Market SSAC booth, and regular contributions to the online community newsletter. A designated staff assisting with workshop registrations, and community and member inquiries will provide consistent service to the community throughout the duration of the position.

Responsibilities:

- Under the direction of the Artcraft Manager:

o Assist with annual Gallery set-up and artwork delivery

o Assist with Artcraft Showcase Exhibitions, hanging and launch

o Provide customer service and retail support in the Gallery

o Assist with various Gallery duties including maintaining stock, data entry, customer service and communications with local artisans

- Under the direction of the Workshops Coordinator, support the Summer Art Camps:

o Respond to registrations and inquiries

o Set up and tear down during Camps

o Assist instructor in delivering workshop content

o Provide supervision during drop-off, pick-up and breaks

- Under the direction of the Arts Council Administrator, undertake Community Outreach projects including:

o Set up, oversee and tear-down weekly Market Booth

o Assist members with renewals, and with new Artist profiles on online Directory

o Bi-weekly contributions to community newsletter

- Assist with all aspects of daily office duties such as answering phones, emails, filing, photocopying, etc., and other duties as assigned.


Qualifications - The ideal candidate will have:

- Strong passion for the visual arts

- Strong public relations skills;

- Experience in a retail setting;

- Experience or passion working with children;

- Ability to multi-task;

- Ability to work independently and as part of a team

- Strong computer skills;

- Strong leadership skills;

- Strong time management skills;

- Must be willing to undergo a Criminal Records Check

- Must be a full time student intending to return to full time studies

- Preference for student studying Art History, Fine or Studio Arts.


Rate of pay: $14.50/hr. – 32.5 hours per week Term of Employment: 14 weeks, June to August
