The Whitby Public Library is seeking qualified candidates for the above position.

This position is made possible through the Young Canada Works in Both Official Languages program. This program allows young Canadians to gain practical work experience related to their studies and explore career opportunities, while improving their second language skills and earning money to help pay for their education.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Young Canada Works requires candidates to be between the ages of 16 and 30 and be a high school, college or university student. Preference will be given to candidates who have completed one year of postsecondary education. Excellent communication skills, knowledge of children’s literature, and critical thinking skills are required. Fluency in both English and French are required. The candidate should enjoy and have experience working with children and teens. Both maturity and a sense of fun are essential.

POSITION SUMMARY:
The Summer Program Assistant will work in the Children’s Department to deliver programs to children and young teens to promote literacy and reading, including special Canada 150 programs and events. The Assistant will provide weekly family storytime programs in both English and French and weekly programs for Summer Reading Club as well as a French Reading program.

The Assistant will report to the Department Head – Children’s & Adult Fiction. This temporary position runs from May 23 – August 12, 2017. 35 hours per week. $13.00 per hour.
