The Programming Assistant will work at the Bruce County Museum & Cultural Centre, in Southampton (Saugeen Shores), Bruce County. The County offers a higher-than-minimum hourly wage of $13.00. The position commences at the Museum on June 26, finishes on August 18, 2017 and includes a two-day New Employee Orientation Training at the Bruce County Offices in Walkerton.

The preferred candidate for the position will be a post-secondary student, ideally from a drama, history, recreation, or cultural related field. The candidate will be enthusiastic and enjoy interacting with people of all ages, and be willing to dress in costume as part of the job. The candidate should be proficient in the standard Microsoft Office suite of programs, especially Word and Excel for data content and management. He/she should present well, be personable and neat in appearance, so as to convey a professional and positive impression at all times. Good communication skills both in writing and editing as well as a professional yet friendly manner will be assets. Time management and project resource management (budget, volunteer support, etc.) will be facets of this job. Teamwork is essential to the successful implementation of the Museum’s programming. The job will include some setting up and taking down of temporary displays and interpretive activities to accommodate other Museum events.

From June 26 to June 30th, the Programming Assistant will receive training and orientation at the Bruce County Museum & Cultural Centre starting with a tour of the facility and introductions to Museum staff and volunteers; get to know the details of the Museum’s exhibit halls and related programming for the summer; assist in preparing and fine tuning scripts and activities for each of the exhibit areas and programs; and become familiar with what a Tour Guide needs to know to provide informative tours.

After June 30th the Programming Assistant will assist with implementation of the summer programming including presenter liaison, setting up tech requirements, introducing presenters, and other production-related tasks as required; monitor and guide hands-on activity areas set up for children; act as Tour Guide for incoming tour groups, and interpreting exhibits. He/she will monitor and guide planned activities and programs for the summer feature exhibits. The candidate will also be involved in training and monitoring youth and adult volunteers as it relates to their job. They may occasionally assist as an on-board tour guide on a community tourist trolley.
Throughout the summer, the Programming Assistant will debrief with the Program Co-ordinator to assist in improving training and support.
