The Archdiocese of Halifax-Yarmouth seeks a student to lead guided tours of St. Mary's Cathedral Basilica, in beautiful downtown Halifax.
Halifax is a beautiful harbour city, rich with culture, history and heritage. Local "Haligonians" are friendly, easy going, welcoming people. Visitors enjoy pleasantly warm summer temperatures, with manageable humidity, and plenty of salt or fresh water close by, to enjoy a swim, or other water sports. Halifax is home to world class restaurants, live theatre, museums, a little gambling if you're so inclined, and music, music and more music!
Seat of the Archdiocese of Halifax-Yarmouth, and a designated National Historic site, St. Mary's will soon be celebrating it's 200th anniversary. A tour guide is required, to highlight to visitors it's architectural, religious and historic significance for not only Roman Catholics, but all of Halifax, throughout her almost 200 year history.
The successful candidate will lead several guided tours daily, pointing out architectural features, historic and artistic features, elements which reflect tenents of faith, and the ways that St. Mary's has played a role in the development of Halifax and of Canada. The tour guide will also assist in the development of an on-line, self directed tour, will handle retail sales for a few commemorative items in a small "gift shop" and may be called upon to assist the Archivist with on-site preservation projects, as time allows.
The ideal candidate for this position will be a courteous, responsible and confident student of History, Religious Studies, Theology, Anthropology, Art History, Architecture, Museum Studies, Library and Information Sciences, Archives, other Social Sciences or Humanities, or Travel and Tourism.
The demonstrated ability to work independently, as well as in a team setting, will be essential.
Experience working with the public and/or speaking in front of groups of people will be a strong asset. Experience in retail sales and/or cash handling will also be an asset.
Applicants will require a respectful familiarity with the teachings, practices, history and structure of the Roman Catholic faith tradition, and be comfortable working within an active worship space. (Applicants need not be practicing Roman Catholics.)
Proficiency in English is required. Proficiency in French, or another language, is an asset, but not required.
Partial funding for this position is provided through Young Canada Works, a program which provides employment opportunities for students. Applicants must be eligible to work in Canada, and be full time students, returning to full time studies in the fall.
This will be a full time position, beginning in mid-May, and lasting until the end of August. Applicants must be available for the entirety of the work term.
Applications, including a cover letter describing the suitability of the applicant for the position, will be accepted via the Young Canada Works job board, via email to Mrs. Jeannette Smith at jsmith@halifaxyarmouth.org, by regular mail, Attention Jeannette Smith, to:
