ASSISTANT EDUCATOR

The Art Gallery of Grande Prairie, one of the largest arts organizations in Alberta, presents various national and international artists and curated exhibitions in our seven gallery spaces, which enhance our mandate and provide a cultural necessity. We also offer two educational spaces: The Carlstrom Family Green Space and a classroom.

We are looking for an energetic individual who will support the Curator of Education and Public Programs in planning, organizing, implementing and evaluating aspects of the education and public programming activities.

The successful candidate will be responsible for the planning and teaching of Art Quest, the Art Gallery of Grande Prairie’s summer art camp for children. The candidate will also provide tours of our contemporary art exhibitions to diverse audiences.

Position start date: as soon as possible
Work Schedule: Term position, May - August 2017 (12 weeks)
Hours: The work- week typically runs from Monday – Friday. It is a 35-hour week.

Wage: $ 16.00 / hour


DUTIES:

- Research, develop and deliver audience specific interpretive and Green Space programming based on current exhibitions.

- Develop learning outcomes and interactive learning activities for interpretive programs and community arts events.

- Research, plan and implement high-quality age appropriate art lessons for Art Quest, our summer art camp, based on themes of current contemporary art exhibitions for students 6 – 12 years old.

- Marketing of Art Quest and other educational programs in the community.

- Lead groups through the Art Gallery’s exhibitions as well as run and supervise hands-on art activities (after appropriate training).

- Assist with the maintenance of The Carlstrom Family Green Space and design of interactive activities.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Successful candidate with educational and practical experience in Visual Arts or Art History or education, including Museum Education, would be best suited for this position. Experience working with children is necessary. The candidate should be able to work with students of varying capacities and ethnicity, and sustain excellent communication skills in a polite and patient fashion. The candidate must also be an independent, organized and self-initiating team player. Knowledge of Microsoft Office, Adobe Photoshop, website browsers and email is also important. A valid driver’s license and First Aid Certificate will be required.

Successful candidate

- is a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident, or have refugee status in Canada; Note: Non-Canadian students holding temporary work visas or awaiting permanent status are not eligible.

- is legally entitled to work in Canada;

- is between 16 and 30 years of age at the start of employment;

- has been a full-time student (as defined by your educational institution) in the semester preceding the job;

- intends to return to full-time studies in the semester following the YCW job.

- does not have another full-time job (over 30 hours a week) while employed with YCW
