Are you passionate about art education and can demonstrate knowledge of contemporary art, and Indigenous art practices and want to develop skills in developing educational resources and curriculum? The Surrey Art Gallery is offering a 16-week placement for a candidate who is a full-time student obtaining a degree in education, museum education, art education, Aboriginal education, and/or a related discipline. The successful candidate will be a motivated, methodical, articulate self-starter with excellent organizational and communication skills, a passion for community-based arts education, developing learner-centered educational materials, and able to work independently and as part of a team at one of Canada’s most vibrant visual arts institutions. This placement is designed to provide an overview of gallery education research and development practices and techniques. Surrey is a diverse and growing community, so sensitivity to different cultures plus exceptional research skills and strong attention to detail are a must. Candidates must be fluent in English. The Surrey Art Gallery is an equal opportunity employer and encourages applications from all qualified candidates.

Characteristics of City/Region and Mission & Mandate of the Host Organization:
Surrey is an increasingly important urban centre with a diverse, multi-ethnic population of over 500,000, with 40% under the age of 30 (30% of Surrey’s population is under 19, and a further 10% are under 30) and the province’s largest school district (with over 3,000 Aboriginal students, representing 5% of all students). 1,000 new residents arrive in Surrey each month, not including children born here. The Gallery provides contemporary art opportunities regionally and regularly attracts visitors and program participants beyond Metro Vancouver. The mission of the Surrey Art Gallery is to exhibit and interpret the work of emerging and established BC artists and leading Canadian and international artists, provide diverse educational programmes and publications about contemporary art, and acquire, manage, and preserve a permanent contemporary art collection.

The Surrey Art Gallery is situated on the traditional territories of the Salish peoples, including the Semiahmoo, Katzie, Kwikwetlem, Kwantlen, Qayqayt, and Tsawwassen First Nations. The urban Aboriginal population in Surrey is quickly growing and is projected to increase within the next 15 years from 19,000 to as high as 48,000 people.

The Surrey School District is the largest district in BC – one of the few growing districts in the province, and fasted growing education systems in Canada. There are 70,000 students in elementary and secondary private schools in Surrey, and this does not include the many students who attend private and religious schools, and are educated through alternative models. The Surrey School District has partnered with the Gallery for the annual elementary and secondary school exhibitions since its opening in 1975. This 40 plus year relationship also led to the 2002 development of the joint committee which includes senior staff from the District, elementary and secondary teachers from the Surrey Art Teachers’ Association (SATA), and curatorial and educational staff from the Gallery.

Post-Project:
Following the completion of the placement and assuming positive measurable outcomes and performance, the Gallery will provide references for the Gallery Education Assistant for future job opportunities. The Assistant will become part of the Gallery’s ‘family’, and will have access to future events at the Gallery for networking. Gallery staff will continue to mentor the Assistant beyond the duration of the placement, providing a sounding board and contacts as appropriate for the Assistant’s future ideas and initiatives. Should the Assistant demonstrate the appropriate strong levels of performance and commitment, the Gallery may invite them to apply for suitable job openings as they become available, and will assist them with locating and using appropriate job search materials both within the City of Surrey and the broader cultural community. The placement has been crafted to maximize professional networking and skills acquisition opportunities for the Assistant during the placement, and the relationships the Assistant forms during their stay at the Gallery are expected to be highly valuable for their future career.
