R.J. Haney Heritage Village & Museum is a forty acre heritage site located in Salmon Arm, BC is looking to hire 4 students that are currently in studies and will be returning to school in the fall. They must be between the ages of 16 and 30, a Canadian citizen, be willing to register in the YCW inventory, be willing to commit to the full duration of the work dates and treat this as their primary job. The position is full time (37.5 hours/week), starting May 7, 2017 with a wage of $12.25 per hour.

The facility is used by residents of Salmon Arm and area and tourists traveling to the area as a heritage tourist destination. We can promise you a memorable and gainful working experience as a Heritage Interpreter/Actor. The Village, Museum and Marjorie’s Tea Room offers a unique cultural heritage experience for the traveling and local public from mid May to the end of September. The Village also hosts special events, functions and Villains and Vittles Dinner Theatre 3 nights per week during July and August.

The Heritage Interpreter/Actor works with the General Manager and Visitor Services Department supporting the day to day operation of the Heritage Village and Museum and greeting visitors. The ideal candidate should have an interest in history and historical events and be willing to learn about our local history. Successful candidates assist in the educational programs, promotion of site interpretation and the Village’s activities and depict the local history as an actor in the 27 live performances of our dinner theatre production.

The play is written by a local playwright who will be involved in the direction and production. Candidates should have acting, music, singing and dancing experience and will be directly involved in developing costumes and props. The Village also organizes other events, weddings, and operates a tea room. As a Heritage Interpreter/Actor you will participate in the set-up, implementation, and breakdown of these events and services. Candidates must be available to work evenings and weekends.

Candidate will be part of the Haney Players bring the history of Salmon Arm to life by performing as significant figures from the era 1911 to 1930. Haney Players deliver scripted monologues during guided interpretive tours of the Heritage Village, Museum and R.J. Haney House and during our special education programs and community events. Players are also required to spend a significant amount of time interacting with the other pioneer characters, and visitors to the Village while remaining in character.

Candidates should have strong communication skills and be energetic, out-going and punctual, and work autonomously within a team environment. Experience with Microsoft Work and Publisher would be an asset, but will be taught. Be able to convincingly portray one of the following characters: Mary Elvira Stirling, Ethel Maria Louise Stirling, Emily Margaret Herring, Miss Vera Halpenney, Cyril Thomson, R.J. Haney or Bert Green. Have performance experience and excellent voice projection skills; and be able to creatively improvise while remaining in character.

The successful candidate should have an interest in studies in one of the following fields: History, Historical Interpretation, Museology, Archaeology, Tourism, Art History, Communications, Education, Theatre, Liberal Arts, Heritage Studies or another relevant discipline.
