POSITION: First Nations Conservation Assistant
Employment: 16 weeks, May 1, 2017 to August 18, 2017 (flexible start date)
Location: Toronto Zoo, Scarborough, Ontario

The Toronto Zoo is seeking a candidate to fill the position of First Nations Conservation Assistant. The successful candidate will assist with the implementation of the Toronto Zoo’s Turtle Island Conservation programme and with Adopt-a-Pond’s Blanding’s Turtle Headstarting and Reintroduction project. The First Nations Conservation Assistant will be responsible for assisting with the release, tracking and monitoring of Blanding’s Turtles into the Rouge National Urban Park (RNUP), for assisting in the development and planning of First Nations programming and event development at the Toronto Zoo and for conducting wetland site assessments on First Nations and provincial park lands.

RESPONSIBILITIES
• Assist in husbandry, radio-tracking and monitoring of Species at Risk turtles (Blanding's Turtles)
• Maintain monitoring data and maps to track turtle movement in the RNUP and communicate this information effectively to staff members and external partners through reports, blog posts and presentations
• Utilize vegetation and wetland identification skills to classify and evaluate species at risk habitat (specifically for Western Chorus Frogs and Massassauga Rattlesnakes)
• Assist with data entry and communications for the Toronto Zoo's Ontario Turtle Tally and FrogWatch Ontario citizen science monitoring programmes
• Assist with development and delivery of programming/resources for Toronto Zoo’s Turtle Island Conservation Programme
• Assist with the organization and planning of events at the Toronto Zoo and RNUP including National Aboriginal Day celebrations

REQUIREMENTS
• Candidate must be between 18-30 years of age (Grant Requirement)
• Candidate must be returning to school in Fall 2017 (Grant Requirement)
• Post secondary student in biology, restoration ecology, environmental science or wildlife management
• Experience related to First Nations studies is strongly encouraged
• Field experience, especially experience monitoring and handling reptiles, vegetation identification and collecting water quality parameters is an asset
• Experience following monitoring protocols and maintaining and updating data
• Full G license and daily use of a car is an asset (work-related mileage will be compensated)
• Experience and enthusiasm for First Nations Traditional Knowledge and languages an asset
• Comfortable working outdoors and experience wearing and working in chest waders is preferred

Toronto Zoo conservation programmes provide educational and stewardship resources to assist in the recovery of threatened species and their habitats. In addition, we have several conservation and field programmes dedicated to keeping common species common. The successful candidate will work as part of a team in developing and implementing these programmes.

Turtle Island Conservation partners with First Nations communities to preserve significant cultural and natural landscapes. Our vision is the preservation of First Nations ways of knowing to guide communities for generations to come.

The Adopt-A-Pond Wetland Conservation Programme provides educators, students and community groups with stewardship resources and educational opportunities to protect, restore and conserve wetland habitats and biodiversity. With support from Parks Canada, the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority and the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry, the Toronto Zoo raises and reintroduces juvenile Blanding's turtles into natural and created wetlands of the Rouge National Urban Park.
