Collections Assistant required to inventory and organize permanent and archival collections at the Wilson MacDonald Memorial School Museum. Information will be also be entered into the Museums collections database. The successful candidate will be responsible for identifying item for deaccession, conservation, use in public and educational programming, and organizing artifacts and archival collections into proper storage for ease of access by staff and volunteers.

Wilson MacDonald Memorial School Museum has an extensive collection of rural education material consisting of 3-D objects and an archival collection relating to Selkirk and Haldimand County; the collection of photographs, text books, furnishings, sports related materials, etc., dates back to the 1800's.

The Collections Assistant will work with Museum staff and volunteers to inventory and organize a large percentage of the existing permanent collection and archival collections in order to improve the accessibility and usability of the 1200 objects by staff and volunteers.

Experience in library or museum setting or working knowledge of artefact handling, museum archives processes and computer skills is preferred.
Additionally, the Collections Assistant may be asked to assist patrons with general research queries as required and to assist in collection organization as required.
The candidate must demonstrate excellent organizational and time management skills and the ability to prioritize in order to meet deadlines. The Assistant must manage tasks with thorough attention to detail, be enthusiastic and creative with excellent oral and written communication skills. This position requires initiative as well as collaboration and flexibility when working with the staff and volunteers. Experience with Microsoft Office software, such as Word, Excel, Publisher, Access, PowerPoint and Outlook, as well as Freedom of Information Act, AODA legislation and other relevant documentation would be a benefit. Candidates should possess a valid Ontario driver’s license. While First Aid and CPR training is not a requirement, it would be considered an asset.

Level of Education: Community College or University (with an emphasis on Museum Studies or related discipline)
Candidate will be contacted by Haldimand Museums staff and interview will be arranged. Interviews will take place at the Haldimand County Administration Building, 45 Munsee St. Cayuga, ON.
Candidates will be interviewed by a panel of two Heritage and Culture Unit staff using questions determined by the Haldimand County Human Resources Division and Museums staff. Testing to determine level of computer sill may be administered by Human Resources Staff. Candidates will be asked to provide a portfolio of their work.

The successful candidate will be subject to a criminal reference check.
