The Diefenbaker Canada Centre seeks to employ a current post-secondary student, returning in the fall, preferably in the disciplines of History, English, Education, International or Political Studies, or other humanities or social science fields as a Research and Special Projects Assistant (RSPA). The ideal candidate is passionate about history and culture; this is an excellent opportunity to gain career skills in a dynamic cultural setting supporting public and academic engagement.

Working with the Curator and Collections Manager, the RSPA will assist in the design of a new museum exhibit, utilizing and synthesizing recently researched material. To accomplish this they will: a) use the existing body of exhibit research to draft the preliminary script and text for didactic exhibit panels; b) research, identify and secure pertinent artefacts, documents and images from the Diefenbaker collection and archives as well as from external local and national archives and; c) assist with the overall conceptual exhibit design, including panel layouts, themes, fonts, colours, images, and documents.
The RSPA will also conduct tours, deliver educational programs, and interpret exhibits for community school groups and newcomer and other nonprofit community groups. Previous experience working or volunteering as an interpreter, a tour guide or in a museum or other event setting is considered an asset.

This position requires schedule flexibility as weekend and evening shifts are required. The ideal candidate will have some general familiarity with or the willingness to work towards, the following skill set:

• Understanding of and interest in Canadian history
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Strong interpersonal and networking skills
• Flexible and able to adapt to change in a fast-paced setting
• Organizational and administrative skills
• Ability to show initiative and set and meet deadlines while working on multiple projects
• Ability to work effectively independently and as part of a team in both a leadership and support capacity
• A commitment to exceptional customer service, including effective in person, phone and email communication with diverse patrons
• Ability to utilize the knowledge and skill set of peers and seek guidance when hesitant
• Ability to problem solve effectively in an independent manner
• Basic computer skills, including familiarity with MS Office and Windows
