Job Title: Content Researcher

A not-for-profit heritage organization established in 1976, the Multicultural History Society of Ontario (MHSO) collects, preserves, and makes available irreplaceable records of our histories of migration and ethnicity, and it undertakes educational programming to increase appreciation of the importance of diversity to the development and ongoing vitality of Ontario and Canada. The Society is the creator of the most extensive assemblage in the country of primary sources documenting immigrant and ethnic experiences. Its collections include over 5,300 oral history interviews, 610 hardcover and 330 microfilmed ethnic newspapers, and 60,000 historical photographs.

The Society is in the midst of a multi-year initiative to create an online digital archive, Discovering Multicultural Canada, which will include digitized resources from its collections augmented by contextual information and innovative educational programming. It is looking for two Content Researchers to transcribe and annotate oral history interviews, and produce biographical notes for inclusion in the archive. The focus will be interviews conducted during the late 1970s and early 1980s with Elders in Nishnawbe Aski Nation communities in northern Ontario.

Location – Thunder Bay
Duration – 12 weeks (May 29, 2017 – August 18, 2017)
Salary – $14 per hour

Job Description: The Content Researchers will select 7 interviews, primarily from the collection of Nishnawbe Aski Nation interviews, based on an initial assessment of the significance of the narrators (i.e., interviewees) and the topics covered in the interviews, as well as potential connections between the narrators and similarities in their experiences. They will produce verbatim written transcripts for each of the 7 interviews. They will then annotate the 7 transcripts – i.e., identify subjects in the interviews that require explanation, undertake primary and secondary historical research on these subjects, write the explanatory notes and prepare references, and add the notes with references to the transcripts as endnotes. Finally, they will prepare biographical notes on the narrators of the 7 interviews – i.e., extract pertinent information from the interviews, undertake primary and secondary historical research to confirm the information from the interviews and to obtain additional information, and write and reference the biographical notes.

Qualifications of a strong candidate include:
• demonstrated interest in Public History, Canadian History, and/or Indigenous Studies, including university-level course work and relevant work experience;
• strong research skills, including experience conducting primary and secondary historical research;
• strong skills in summarizing, synthesizing, analyzing, and interpreting information;
• strong written communications skills, including facility in tailoring writing style and tone to the intended audience;
• ability to use and learn various computer and software applications (Microsoft Office);
• ability to take direction and work within the parameters of established processes and practices;
• ability to work independently with minimal supervision;
• ability to ask for clarification or assistance when needed;
• ability to meet deadlines;
• good judgment and demonstrated professionalism; and
• ability to understand languages in addition to English is an asset.
